Head of Digital Compliance, IT specialist and Expert in Data Analytics
My name is Carsten Müller. I am an IT specialist and Expert in Data Analytics and last but not least Partner and Head of Digital Compliance at KPMG AG. For the past 25 years I have been working in the areas of data analytics, information risk management and information technology compliance. Today, these issues are more exciting than ever thanks to the rapid development of digital networks. Due to my many years of experience and expertise in this field, I find it particularly interesting to observe how certain topics resurface time and again and which new aspects emerge in the development of possible solutions.
The most important issues that I have been dealing with for most of my career are:
- In which direction does data analytics need to develop in audit in the future?
- How has audit developed as a whole?
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of a manual audit over an automated one?
- What are the critical success factors for data analytics used in audit?
The future of data analytics in audit
For me, the question of the future of data analytics in audit is a highly personal one. Having invested many years of my professional career into this project, I would describe myself as the “father” of data analytics in Audit at KPMG Germany, so this project is to a certain extent my “baby”. The focus of my work was not only on the development and implementation of data analytics applications, but primarily on issues relating to compliance in the IT audit of data integrity, completeness and IT security of applications, databases, operating systems, interfaces, access authorisation concepts and networks as part of special audits or audits of financial statements.
After surviving the growing pains of childhood and adolescence, data analytics has finally reached maturity. This is why I find the time we are in now so exciting. I am certain that data analytics has a great future in audit and am thrilled to share my knowledge and experience in this area.
